General Information

What is ProXeed® Plus?

ProXeed® Plus is a dietary supplement specifically designed to optimize sperm quality and protect against free radical damage (reactive oxygen species, or ROS).* Sperm quality refers to sperm count, concentration, motility, and morphology (shape). The ingredients in ProXeed® Plus have been clinically proven to optimize sperm health, raising sperm count, concentration, motility, and speed.* There has been only limited data on the influence of the ingredients in ProXeed® Plus on morphology; however, the ingredients in ProXeed® Plus are important for sperm development and membrane stabilization.*

How should ProXeed® Plus be taken?

Two packets of the male fertility solution ProXeed® Plus should be taken each day, one in the morning and one in the evening. Mix each packet with at least 4 ounces (1/2 cup or 120 ml) of juice or other cold beverage, and stir for one minute. Avoid hot beverages and carbonated drinks such as soda. Alternatively, ProXeed® Plus may be mixed with applesauce or yogurt. ProXeed® Plus should be taken shortly after mixing and not stored to be taken later.

It's best to establish a routine of taking ProXeed® Plus at a particular time each morning and evening. You will increase your chances of remembering to take ProXeed® Plus if you take it at the same time each day, such as at breakfast and dinner.

What should I do if I forget to take ProXeed® Plus?

One packet of ProXeed® Plus should be taken twice daily (morning and evening) with at least six to eight hours between packets. The morning packet can be taken up until mid-afternoon, with the evening packet delayed six to eight hours. If it has been longer than eight hours, then it is best to omit the morning packet altogether and take the evening packet at the usual time. The evening packet can be taken up until bedtime.

What if I forget to take ProXeed® Plus for several days?

If you forget to take ProXeed® Plus for several days, simply resume taking ProXeed® Plus on a regular basis. If the interruption is prolonged you will delay experiencing the optimum benefits of ProXeed® Plus. Interruptions will have less impact the longer you take ProXeed® Plus.

How long will I need to take ProXeed® Plus?

We recommend you take ProXeed® Plus for at least six months. Raising sperm count and optimizing sperm quality is slow because it takes sperm a long time to mature. Sperm take approximately 74 days to mature and an additional 20 days to become capable of fertilization. Therefore, it takes six months to optimize sperm quality, and six months is recommended as the usual course of supplementation and the initial order quantity. Initial improvement may be seen in as early as three months. However, you should continue to take ProXeed® Plus as long as you and your partner want to optimize your sperm quality.*

What should I do after taking ProXeed® Plus for six months?

ProXeed® Plus should be taken as long as you desire to optimize your sperm quality.

Are there any guarantees that ProXeed® Plus will work on me?

Sigma-Tau cannot guarantee that all men will respond to the male fertility supplement ProXeed® Plus. The development of ProXeed® Plus is the result of a long history of scientific research that supports the role of ProXeed® Plus in improving sperm quality and raising the sperm count. There have been over a dozen human clinical trials to date, all demonstrating the ability of the ingredients in ProXeed® Plus to optimize sperm quality in men with idiopathic (of unknown cause) poor sperm quality.*

As with any dietary supplement, vitamin, or medication, response can vary from person to person with some not responding at all. In the clinical trials with the ingredients in ProXeed® Plus, approximately 20%–30% of men with idiopathic poor sperm quality did not respond. This could in part be due to any number of factors that affect sperm quality such as environment, lifestyle, diet, hormone levels, and age. We think it is important for you to talk with your healthcare provider about the use of ProXeed® Plus as a male fertility supplement, as this individual best understands your medical history and will be able to place the information concerning ProXeed® Plus in an appropriate context for you.

Why is ProXeed® Plus a dietary supplement and not a prescription?

The FDA defines a dietary supplement as “a product (other than tobacco) intended to supplement the diet that bears or contains one or more of the following dietary ingredients: a vitamin; a mineral; an herb or other botanical; an amino acid; a dietary substance for use by man to supplement the diet by increasing the total dietary intake; or a concentrate, metabolite, constituent, extract, or combination of any ingredient described above” [CFR Section 201 (21 U.S.C. 321)]. In compliance with the FDA definition, ProXeed® Plus has been formulated to supplement the diet by increasing the total dietary intake of its active ingredients [L-carnitine (LC) fumarate, acetyl-L-carnitine (ALC) HCl, coenzyme Q10, vitamin C, vitamin B12, selenium, zinc, fructose, and citric acid].

Why is ProXeed® Plus not sold at drug stores or at health food stores?

At this time ProXeed® Plus is not available at local drug stores or health food stores. Our initial marketing research indicated that due to the sensitive nature of this subject matter (i.e., a male fertility supplement designed for improving sperm health and raising sperm count), most customers preferred purchasing the product from the privacy of their homes. Our marketing strategies, however, are continuously evolving in response to consumer demands.

How is ProXeed® Plus made?

All ingredients in ProXeed® Plus are manufactured using a purely synthetic FDA-approved pharmaceutical batch process, which uses only chemical ingredients as raw materials. No animal fats, vegetable matter, or biofermentation is involved in or comes in contact with this process.

Furthermore, the combination of these ingredients is done in accordance with good manufacturing practices (GMP) in an FDA-inspected facility. Although the two primary active ingredients (LC fumarate and ALC HCl) are kosher-certified individually, a rabbi did not supervise the combination of the ingredients, and therefore, the final product does not bear kosher certification.

ProXeed® Plus has been modified using the ingredients in ProXeed® as its model. ProXeed® Plus offers additional key nutriceuticals in an effort to obtain optimal sperm health.

Interactions and Side Effects

Are there any interactions with prescription or nonprescription drugs?

There are no known drug interactions between ProXeed® Plus and any prescription or nonprescription drugs available in the United States. As with all supplements, you should consult with your physician before taking ProXeed® Plus if you are taking any prescription medication.*

Are there any side effects with the use of ProXeed® Plus?

ProXeed® Plus is a very safe male fertility supplement. There were no side effects reported in the clinical trials involving the ingredients in ProXeed® Plus. Since the introduction of its parent product, ProXeed®, in late 1998, a small number of customers (less than 1% of new patients) have reported mild gastrointestinal complaints including upset stomach, heartburn, flatulence (gas), and loose stools.

These symptoms can often be reduced by: dividing the dose (taking 1/2 packet at 8 a.m., 1 p.m., 5 p.m., and 10 p.m.); taking ProXeed® Plus mixed in water with meals; and/or avoiding citrus fruit juices. For more information, please read “How should ProXeed® Plus be taken?”

Are there any contraindications to taking ProXeed® Plus?

ProXeed® Plus is contraindicated in anyone with known hypersensitivity or allergy to any of the ingredients in ProXeed® Plus. There are no other known contraindications.

Is reimbursement available for ProXeed® Plus?

ProXeed® Plus is marketed as a dietary supplement by Sigma-Tau , in the United States. Because ProXeed® Plus is a dietary supplement and not a drug, it does not require a prescription and an NDC (National Drug Code) has not been assigned. Traditional prescription card programs do not usually cover dietary supplements because by definition they are intended for prescription-only items.

Insurance benefits, however, vary greatly by insurance plan and employer. This also may vary by state, as some have laws mandating certain types of coverage for fertility benefits while others do not. Contact your medical insurance benefits manager (usually your employer) to determine eligibility for insurance reimbursement or for reimbursement through a flex-benefit plan.

Sigma-Tau is not aware of the availability of reimbursement for ProXeed® Plus.
